Privacy Policy

Breathing New Life (BNL) is committed to protecting your privacy. The following Privacy Policy explains the information we collect and how we use it. When you use the BNL website, communicate with BNL, or participate in or volunteer at BNL-sponsored programs and events, you consent to the use of your personal information by BNL in the manner specified in this Privacy Policy.

Our website, breathingnewlife.org, includes links to external websites. These links do not fall under the breathingnewlife.org domain; therefore, your interactions with these websites and the use of their features are governed by their privacy policies.

TYPES OF INFORMATION WE COLLECT AND WHY WE COLLECT IT

BNL collects information only to help us better serve the lung-transplant community we support. In general, the type and amount of information we collect will depend on how you choose to interact with BNL. For instance, if you are a patient or caregiver subscribing to our newsletter, we will need different information to serve you than if you are using our website or donating to BNL.

Personal Information identifies you as an individual or is linked or linkable to you as an individual. Following are categories and examples of Personal Information that BNL may collect:

  • Contact Information and Preferences. We may request and collect your name, e-mail address, mailing address and telephone number. BNL communicates primarily via e-mail when you subscribe and opt in. We mail a receipt/thank you letter when you donate by check and have not subscribed to our e-mail database. We may use third-party services to assist us in administering your e-mail preferences or to ensure accuracy of contact information.
  • Health Information. We may request certain health-related information from you, such as your relationship to lung transplantation, and – if applicable – your type of lung transplant, date of transplant, or underlying disease. BNL may use this information to target specific educational or support-related communications to patients and their caregivers; or recognize transplant anniversary dates in BNL’s newsletter. You are not required to provide this information or consent to its use, although this may restrict our ability to customize our support or distribution of information.
  • Financial Information. If you use a credit card to donate to BNL or make a retail purchase via the BNL website, you will be redirected to a third-party payment system to process your payment. BNL does not collect or retain credit card information provided by our supporters. We may collect the name of your employer, if you would like to initiate a process for your employer to make a matching donation.
  • Photographs. BNL takes photographs during fund-raising events and may share these photos via the BNL website, social media, or other means. Photos are taken in public settings during public events. If you are included in a photograph and would prefer that it not be distributed, please contact BNL at info@breathingnewlife.org with the photo details and we will remove it from circulation.

Personal Information does not include any information posted, shared or sent by or to you in any public forum, or any other information collected by BNL that is publicly available when BNL collected it.

Aggregate Information is automatically collected when you access the BNL website but does not reveal your specific identity or does not directly relate to an identifiable individual. For example, we may record how many users log on to a service. BNL and its third-party service providers may use tools and services such as cookies, pixel tags, AdWords, and Google Analytics for tracking, reporting, and analyzing website activity. A combination of these is used to operate, evaluate, and improve our programs, and to perform other internal functions.

HOW WE USE – AND MAY SHARE – YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION WE COLLECT

Generally, our uses of Personal Information include providing you with information regarding lung-transplant-related resources and support services, requesting your time as a volunteer, encouraging, enabling and processing your monetary donations, reviewing and paying grant applications, providing fund-raising event communications and newsletters, or managing your e-mail preferences.  To accomplish our mission, your Personal Information may be shared with:

  • Volunteers. We may share limited personal information, such as contact information and your relationship to lung-transplantation, with volunteers who are assisting BNL and who require the information as part of their duties.
  • Third-Party Service Providers. We may share Personal Information with third parties that provide operational services to BNL (such as website hosting, information technology and infrastructure, data analytics, email delivery, credit card processing, order fulfillment, auditing or other services) or that otherwise assist BNL in providing you with support and resources.
  • Social Media.
  • Memorial and Honor Giving. You may choose to honor someone whose life has been impacted by lung transplantation when you make a donation in his or her name. When you indicate a donation is in honor or memory of an individual, BNL may send a letter to the honoree or family informing them of your gift. The amount of money donated through memorial or honor donations is kept confidential, but the individual (or their immediate family in the case of a memorial donation) may be provided with your name and address, unless you indicate you do not wish for this notification to be sent at the time you make the donation.
  • Other Uses or Disclosures of Personal Information. We may also use and disclose your Personal Information as we believe to be necessary or appropriate: (a) to comply with applicable law, which may include laws outside your country of residence, to respond to requests from public and government authorities, which may include authorities outside your country of residence, to cooperate with law enforcement, or for other legal reasons; (b) to enforce our Terms of Use; and (c) to protect our rights, privacy, safety or property, and/or that of our affiliates, you or others.
